It has now been 150 years since the birth of Jean Sibelius. In honour of the anniversary Ondine releases 2 CD collection Jean Sibelius: The Essential Orchestral Favourites.
The publication is an updated version of a compilation which was published 10 years ago. The publication has now been expanded into 2 records including the favourite artworks Finlandia, Valse Trist, Tuonelan Joutsen and Karelia-series and also the most known, wider masterpieces: violin concerto and the 2nd. sympfony.
The specific feature is a 52-page and bilingual (English and Finnish) record booklet which includes various exceptional pictures of the composer, taken by a photographer Bertil Dahlgren. Nine of these pictures have never been published before.
The compilation includes the one and only recording of the composer leading his own music: Sibelius leading Andante festivo with Radio-orchestra on New Year's day in 1939.
The other recordings of the compilation are from the City Orchestra of Helsinki led by Leif Segerstam. The vocalist of the violin concerto is Pekka Kuusisto.
